Adult Essay Competition

The Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) an agency of the Ministry of Industry, Technology, Energy and Commerce (MITEC) has special responsibility to accelerate the implementation of the national energy policy, particularly the use of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies in Jamaica. The PCJ as part of its ongoing public education campaign to heighten the awareness of energy conservation and efficiency invites applicants to submit essays on any of the topics below:
  • Describe and discuss the sustainable initiatives that you would recommend to accelerate the diversification of Jamaica’s energy mix and to encourage the development of indigenous energy resources.
  • It is the year 2020. Jamaica is on a path to eliminate the country’s fixation on imported crude oil and minimize Green House Gas emissions. What would the top story of Jamaica’s major newspapers look like?
  • How do you think development in Jamaica would be impacted if the nation makes a switch from dependence on fossil fuels to indigenous sources of energy?
  • Outside of legislation, describe ways in which the PCJ could stimulate designers and builders to make appropriate energy efficiency selections in the construction of buildings.
Prize & Judging:
  • 1st PRIZE - Receives a trip to the Florida Solar Energy Centre
  • 2nd PRIZE - Receives a solar lighting system
  • 3rd PRIZE - Receives a DC to AC inverter
  • A panel of three judges will judge the Competition.
  • The decision of the judges is final.
