The PCJ, fully aware of its social responsibilities, plays a significant role in community and educational development by contributing in the following areas:-
Energy Conservation Incentive Programme for Schools
The Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) through the Ministry of Energy has been mandated to drive energy conservation and efficiency in Jamaica through public education. In doing so the PCJ must ensure that the National Energy Policy objectives are met.
Therefore, in order for the Corporation to fulfill this mandate while demonstrating good corporate citizenship, the PCJ implemented an Energy Conservation Incentive Programme for Schools. This Programme, which was conceptualized in January 2003, was designed to educate students about energy conservation and environmental facts, encourage maintenance of high academic standards, as well as improve their behaviour, values and attitudes.
The objectives of the Programme are:
▪ To sensitize students on salient energy conservation and efficiency, and environmental facts facilitated through inter-active seminars and exhibitions.
▪ To encourage students to maintain high academic and behavioural standards. This is rewarded by all-inclusive trips to Wigton Windfarm Limited Font Hill Beach Park, St. Elizabeth.
▪ To increase students’ knowledge base by facilitatingan educational tour of Wigton Windfarm Limited – a Subsidiary of the PCJ. There they are given first-hand information on renewable energy, as well as the Windfarm’s contribution to the national development.
▪ To improve students’ involvement in projects that will encourage creative and methodical thinking. This is facilitated through poster, essay, jingle, and science innovation competitions.
▪ An annual Awards Ceremony is held to acknowledge the students’ participation in the Programme, and to reward their achievements in the aforementioned competitions. The students receive cash prizes, book vouchers, trophies, certificates, day passes, and weekends at exclusive resorts -among others- courtesy of the PCJ and corporate sponsors.
The Programme has borne positive fruits over the years and as such, in order to expand its reach and effectiveness, schools are rotated thereby allowing more persons to benefit from this positive message.
Adopt-A-School
Font Hill Basic School
The PCJ’s involvement in community development also spans other outreach and public education initiatives designed to entrench the importance of energy conservation throughout Jamaica. The PCJ is keen on early childhood education development, and currently maintains sponsorship of the Font Hill Basic School in St. Elizabeth through an adopt-a-school programme, which has been benefitting the community for many years.
The Corporation’s sponsorship of this school, entails the administration of the school, and continuous education of the student population of approximately twenty (ages three to six years), and three teachers, which includes a Physical Education Teacher.
The following initiatives and activities have been undertaken with respect to this Programme:
▪ Build school building, furnish classrooms and provide continuous maintenance.
▪ Perform administrative activities of the School, including payment of teachers’ salaries and the daily provision of meals.
▪ Undertake annual school related activities, such as: sports day, graduation, teachers’ day recognition, as well as host Christmas treats for the students.
As part of its mission, the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica endeavours to positively impact the surrounding community by helping to make them healthier and more environmentally friendly places to live and work.
Holruth Park
Holruth Park, which lies between Holborn and Ruthven Roads and bordered by Trafalgar Road is an example of a ‘neighbourhood improvement project’. The Park was built and is maintained by the Corporation as a green space in this highly commercialized zone. It is lit by photovoltaic lamps installed as part of the project to encourage the use of solar energy for lighting.
In December 2000, ‘Emerging Nation’ , a 246cm high, bonded bronze sculpture by Basil Watson and mounted in the Park, was presented to the people of Jamaica by the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica
Font Hill Beach Park
Located on the coastline of the Font Hill Property in St. Elizabeth, the beach park is owned and operated by the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ). It was developed in 1998 by the PCJ to include all the necessary amenities. This development helps to control the carrying capacity and thereby maintain the environment quality of the less than 50 metre sandy strip.
There are Gazebos and seating at strategic points around this very beautiful property. Why not take a picnic basket and come and join us on one of the most beautiful beaches in Jamaica?
TThe beach is available for rental for private and public functions. The opening hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday to Sunday.
