The PCJ, fully aware of its social responsibilities, plays a significant role in community and educational development by contributing in the following areas:-
Energy Conservation Incentive Programme for Schools
In January 2003 as part of its public education programme, the PCJ launched the Energy Conservation Incentive Programme for Schools. Given the importance of an energy conscious population to the development of a modern, efficient, diversified energy sector, the Corporation believed it was important to stimulate the training of students from the primary through to the secondary levels of the education system on energy related issues.
The progamme includes science, essay and poster competitions as well as seminars, exhibitions and educational tours of the Wigton Windfarm, Petrojam Refinery (PCJ subsidiaries) and other energy companies. It culminates in an Awards Ceremony at the end of each school year.
To date it has been successful in:
· Sensitizing students to the issues of the energy sector particularly those relating to energy efficiency and conservation and the environment.
· Exposing students to the exciting possibilities of a career in the renewable-energy and energy-efficiency industries.
· Helping students develop a greater appreciation for positive values and attitudes.
NB: The programme was initially named the Energy Conservation Incentive Programme for Inner-City Schools. In the early stages, the focus was on going into inner city schools to engage the students through a holistic programme that spoke to life, their surroundings and an issue as important as energy. Given its success, it was expanded in 2009 to include other schools in the corporate area. The programme was further expanded for the 2011/2012 school year to include 50 new schools from Eastern, Central and Western Jamaica.
As part of its mission, the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica endeavours to positively impact the surrounding community by helping to make them healthier and more environmentally friendly places to live and work.
Holruth Park
Holruth Park, which lies between Holborn and Ruthven Roads and bordered by Trafalgar Road is an example of a ‘neighbourhood improvement project’. The Park was built and is maintained by the Corporation as a green space in this highly commercialized zone. It is lit by photovoltaic lamps installed as part of the project to encourage the use of solar energy for lighting.
In December 2000, ‘Emerging Nation’ , a 246cm high, bonded bronze sculpture by Basil Watson and mounted in the Park, was presented to the people of Jamaica by the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica
Font Hill Beach Park
Located on the coastline of the Font Hill Property in St. Elizabeth, the beach park is owned and operated by the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ). It was developed in 1998 by the PCJ to include all the necessary amenities. This development helps to control the carrying capacity and thereby maintain the environment quality of the less than 50 metre sandy strip.
There are Gazebos and seating at strategic points around this very beautiful property. Why not take a picnic basket and come and join us on one of the most beautiful beaches in Jamaica?
TThe beach is available for rental for private and public functions. The opening hours are 9am to 5pm, Monday to Sunday.
