Jamaica depends on imported oil for over 90% of its energy needs.

Most of the crude is exported from Mexico and Venezuela under the San Jose Accord.

The government and private firms share the petroleum sector. The private companies are local subsidiaries of multinational oil companies that own a number of storage and distribution facilities and retail outlets. PCJ represents the government and is involved in the retail trade through Petcom Ltd.

A look at the petroleum industry statistics shows that energy consumption has been increasing over the last five years. Even with the price of oil on the world market shooting up to over US$70 per barrel and reflected at the pumps, and in services, local energy consumption continues to grow. This phenomenon puts the need for an Energy Efficiency and Conservation programme on the national agenda.

Approximately 26.2 million barrels of crude oil and petroleum products were used in 2005 at a cost of US$1334.9 million. . The Bauxite/Alumina Sector and multinationals import approximately 50% of the total. The total cost over the last 2 years is US$2,278.3 million.
